New ODIN publication on Improved Dietary Guidelines for Vitamin D

ODIN has published improved dietary guidelines for vitamin D based on the first-ever individual participant data (IPD)-level meta-regression analysis from seven winter-based randomized controlled trials. This type of analysis is increasingly recognised as best practice and likely to provide the most appropriate dietary reference value estimates. ODIN reports that almost half of newborn babies have vitamin D deficiency

New research published by ODIN shows that 46% of newborn babies have vitamin D deficiency, and this figure is even higher at 62% in babies born in wintertime. Read more here.

ODIN meeting in Cork

ODIN team members got together on the 17th & 18th November, 2016 in Cork to discuss progress on ODIN workpackage 8 research on vitamin D and cardiovascular and other health outcomes in older adults.

EFSA set dietary reference values for vitamin D

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has set Dietary Reference Values (DRVs) for vitamin D. EFSA defined an adequate intake (AI) of 15 µg per day for healthy individuals over one year of age. This includes pregnant and lactating women. The DRVs for infants aged 7-11 months have been set at 10 µg per day. ODIN at the 4th International Vitamin Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark 25-27th May, 2016

ODIN PIs and researchers made a significant contribution to the recent 4th International Vitamin Conference in Copenhagen. ODIN's Professor Kevin Cashman was an invited keynote speaker while ODIN Professors Mairead Kiely and Christian Mølgaard, and Dr Jette Jakobsen gave plenary lectures. There were oral presentations given by ODIN participants Ellen van Heuvel and Manfred Eggersdorfer. In addition, two posters were presented by ODIN researcher, Jelena Milešević and her colleagues at Eurofir. Read more here.

Congratulations to ODIN’s Taryn Smith on award to attend 19th Workshop on Vitamin D in Boston, USA March 2016

Congratulations to ODIN’s Taryn Smith from the University of Surrey who won the Trainee Travel Award to attend and give an oral presentation on the “Estimation of dietary requirement for vitamin D in UK adolescents aged 14-18 year: a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial.”  at the 19th Workshop on Vitamin D in Boston, USA held between 29th and 31st March, 2016.

There were a significant number of ODIN oral and poster presentations at the 19th Vitamin D Workshop in Boston, MA recently. These included ODIN-related oral presentations by Professor Kiely, Professor Sempos and Professor Lips on vitamin D in a pregnancy cohort, vitamin D measurement standardization, and vitamin D and type II diabetes, respectively.  There were 5 ODIN-related poster presentations by Professor Cashman, Dr. Smith, Dr. Adebayo and MS. Hauger.
